When Christi Smith adopted a pit bull named Tater Tot, she knew the dog and her four-year-old son Pete would become best friends. What she didn’t realize was that the dog would turn out to be a lifesaver for Pete.
Tater Tot was a rescue dog. Christi got him just in time, as he was scheduled to be euthanized that day. In fact, he was only four hours away from being put down when Christi brought him home.
He was the perfect dog for her son. Pete and Tater Tot bonded right away. They were always together and playing with each other.
One evening, as Pete was asleep, Christi noticed that Tater Tot seemed restless. He kept jumping up to the boy and licking him. The dog was trying to wake him up.
The dog also barked and whined to get Christi’s attention. He would run toward her, then run back to the boy, and run toward her again. He was barking the entire time.
Christi understood that Tater Tot was telling her something. She checked on Pete and was alarmed to see that he was delirious and barely breathing.
She brought him to the hospital immediately. Christi wondered what the problem could be, as her son appeared to be okay just moments ago.
After giving Pete a series of tests, doctors learned that his blood sugar was extremely low. This explained why he was incoherent and almost unconscious when his mom found him.
One of the doctors said the drop in blood sugar might have caused Pete’s body to produce ketones. Tater Tot probably smelled these ketones and sensed there was something wrong with the boy.
Christi was so glad her son was brought to the hospital at just the right time. Any moment longer, and Pete could have suffered from more serious health issues.
The dog that got saved from euthanasia saved the life of his boy. See Tater Tot’s amazing story below.
